Our Cardiovascular team cares for both those within the Auckland DHB area and those across the greater Northern Region.

The Cardiovascular team at Auckland DHB delivers the following services:

  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Cardiology
  • Vascular surgery and
  • Cardiothoracic and vascular intensive care unit

The team delivers the National Heart and Lung Transplant Service, which is available to all New Zealanders, including Organ Donation NZ and Transplant Recipient Coordination.

Auckland DHB also runs the national centre for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a form of life support not available anywhere else in New Zealand.  Auckland City Hospital can have up to five patients on ECMO at any one time, with the “miracle machine” doing the critical job of the heart and lungs while patients receive the treatment they need to live.

Auckland City Hospital is the only place in New Zealand where lung transplants are performed, and all those patients are put on ECMO immediately following their operations.  ECMO is also used in critical cases of pneumonia, following some heart surgeries, and in other “life or death” situations involving the heart and lungs.
