The team’s impact

In the last year alone, Auckland City Hospital’s Research team has:

  • 229 new research projects underway, including 75 clinical trials
  • Built its portfolio to over 1,300 active studies
  • Grown to 104 full-time staff across 36 Auckland City Hospital teams
  • Collaborated with 97 organisations, locally and globally, including 68 collaborations with the University of Auckland
  • Ranked as the top research organisation in the New Zealand health sector by a wide margin
  • Published 759 research articles to inform peers and improve healthcare
  • Had 36 articles published in the world’s top 30 health journals
  • Been published in 313 journals to inspire healthcare professionals

This team is at the forefront of clinical research in New Zealand. Why?

  • Acute services are provided together under one roof so researchers can work with patients under the care of specialist teams.
  • They are world leaders in their field, evidenced by top-quality published research articles. They contribute to cancer drug developments and new genetic treatments; neuroscience, surgery and molecular medicine advancements; stroke and cardiovascular disease epidemiology; and understanding hearing disorders, diabetes and preterm labour.
  • The Research Review Committee provides assurance about the safety and appropriateness of all research conducted at Auckland City Hospital.

Over $7 million has been allocated to research; the hospital has an expert panel that selects the best research to fund.

Research has been funded to improve treatment strategies and outcomes for bowel cancer patients.

A donation of $50,000+ to fund a British Cardiovascular Intervention Society interventional cardiology fellowship.

Donations to Punaha Io – The New Zealand Neurogenetics Research Bank, totalling around $90,000.

A two-year surgical fellowship has been funded with the aim to improve women’s health outcomes.

Rupert’s story

Auckland City Hospital’s Research team has made ground-breaking discoveries and developments, which are now successfully used to help patients in day-to-day practice.

The PREP2 algorithm predicts how well stroke patients will recover the use of their hand and arm.

This research helped predict Rupert’s recovery from a stroke when he was just 30 years old.
