The sun was shining on Paul Harvey’s lunch guests in July, as he marked six years since suffering a stroke, and six years of supporting Auckland City Hospital stroke teams and patients.

It is thanks to my sponsors and event guests that I’m able to achieve my fundraising goals.
It was a happy, sunny winter’s afternoon at Longroom in Ponsonby recently, and Paul’s generous sponsors and lunch guests were delighted to raise a further $10,000 for stroke services at Auckland City Hospital – taking Paul’s fundraising total to an amazing $58K!

Six years ago, Paul woke up paralysed on his left side, realising he’d had a stroke. Paul knows first-hand how a stroke can impact your life, if you survive, and his incredible fundraising is helping stroke teams give future patients the world’s best treatment to reduce disability and improve rehabilitation.
Paul is much loved by the hospital’s rehabilitation staff who cared for him six years ago, and we are all beyond grateful for his commitment to bringing people together for a wonderful cause – and a great time. All money raised at Paul’s fundraising events goes directly towards improving stroke services offered at Auckland City Hospital.

Along with the hard-working Stroke Ward staff, we are so grateful to Paul for his ongoing dedication to helping those who cared for him during his four-week stay in the hospital, where he underwent intense stroke rehabilitation therapy.
Paul’s Occupational Therapist at Auckland City Hospital, Helen Nicholson, said: “It’s incredible for a patient to make such an effort to help. Paul’s ongoing support to improve the rehab experience for others is hugely appreciated by both staff and patients; he has transformed our baking group, which helps our patients ‘ both physically and mentally ‘ on their rehab journeys.”
On behalf of everyone impacted by Paul’s generosity, we extend heartfelt thanks to him and his sponsors.
Paul says: “It is thanks to my sponsors and event guests that I’m able to achieve my fundraising goals. Together, we help make things better for the hard-working teams and their patients, whose lives have been turned upside-down by a stroke. I’m deeply grateful for the continued support, which makes all this possible.”

We’re delighted to celebrate Paul’s incredible contribution to the hospital on our Wall of Honour, which sits proudly in the main entrance at Auckland City Hospital, recognising those individuals, trusts and foundations, organisations and companies that make a significant difference to the care and health of our patients and communities.
