Endowment Fund

An endowment is a gift, donated to a nonprofit organisation for a specific purpose.
The Auckland Hospitals Research and Endowment Fund (AHREF) supports Auckland City Hospital and its Foundation in our shared mission to provide world-class healthcare for New Zealanders. The Endowment Fund is grown through donations to the Foundation that are allocated for specific future purposes and invested to derive growth from the capital.

Every year at Auckland City Hospital, thanks to generous donations, the Endowment Fund provides grants to advance hospital services and fund world-class research. Together, with our donors, we support projects that advance healthcare at Auckland City Hospital and its associated sites.

In 2022, with help from the Endowment Fund, 44 research grants were awarded and 759 original research articles were published.

The Endowment Fund, called the Auckland Hospitals Research and Endowment Fund (AHREF), complements the Auckland Hospital Foundation by managing endowment funds for specific purposes in specific areas across the hospital, and it invests those funds to increase their impact for future generations.

This “bank” of endowments is the result of generous donations and bequests to individual hospital services.

The endowment funds are granted to clinical research, fellowships, student internships, and specified projects, according to donors’ wishes and intentions.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Endowment Fund has helped enable these clinical trials, some of which have the potential to change the face of healthcare as we know it.

In 2023 at Auckland City Hospital, 75 new clinical trials got underway, involving 22 medical specialties. Oncology has the largest trial enterprise with 15 new trials underway, reflecting the significant philanthropic interest in advancing cancer care.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Endowment Fund has helped enable these clinical trials, some of which have the potential to change the face of healthcare as we know it.
