  • It is New Zealand’s #1 – the most extensive elective and acute surgery system.
  • The team performs 23,000+ elective surgeries annually.
  • There are around 30,000 acute surgeries (emergency and unplanned) undertaken every year.
  • More than 1,000 cardiac and other specialist surgeries, including complex heart and lung procedures, are performed each year.
  • It is the only team in New Zealand to perform heart transplants, lung transplants, and combined kidney and liver transplants – delivering a vital nationwide service.
  • The team treats highly complex cases from across NZ – performing a wide range of tertiary and quaternary specialised surgeries.
This team is the lifeline for every New Zealander facing critical heart and lung conditions.

This team is a lifeline for New Zealanders who need complex and critical surgeries. Why?

Auckland City Hospital delivers highly specialised surgical services that aren't available anywhere else. It is a major referral centre, caring for the country's most complex cases. Its teams perform advanced, lifesaving surgeries and transplants for patients who have nowhere else to turn.

The hospital is also a major training site for surgeons and perioperative professionals cross specialties – helping to sustain the workforce nationwide.

By supporting this team, you’re expanding what’s possible for patients hospital-wide: major trauma, complex cancers, organ transplants, and high-risk procedures that depend on world-class surgical expertise. Your donation can help Surgical Care save lives — not just in Auckland, but nationwide.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Accelerating robotic surgery pathways

Donations to Surgical Care support technology that can improve outcomes for patients facing life-threatening, time-critical conditions; technology like advanced robotics to enable enhanced precision and safety in complex surgeries.

Introducing robotics at Auckland City Hospital would help our teams keep pace with international best practice, and attract and retain the best surgeons. For example, we have a Cardiothoracic Fellow currently training in Melbourne, where over 90% of lung operations use robotic techniques. Bringing this technology home helps ensure these specialists return and train the next generation locally.

Robotics improves patient outcomes by enabling minimally invasive procedures, reducing complications, and supporting faster recovery. It also reduces physical strain on surgeons and ensures sustainable delivery of complex procedures.

By investing in robotics, donors equip teams with world-class technology to deliver the safest, most effective surgical care — strengthening capability, improving patient outcomes, and building a future-ready health service for all.

Help surgical patients receive world-class care with advanced technologies.

Your support will help Auckland City Hospital’s teams do even more for patients and whānau in their care, beyond what government funding can provide.
