Supporting wellbeing in the Emergency Department

Auckland City Hospital’s Adult Emergency Department is proud to be part of EDWWIN – the Emergency Department Workplace Wellbeing Improvement Network.

EDWWIN is a national collaboration of frontline healthcare workers and consumers, working together to build and share knowledge, attitudes and skills that support wellbeing in our emergency departments.

The focus is on implementing best practice initiatives that strengthen the health and resilience of both patients and staff.

Through the Auckland Hospital Foundation, funding has been provided to support a dedicated Consumer Advisor role within EDWWIN. This role ensures the patient voice is at the heart of decision-making, helping the team to design and embed wellbeing practices that reflect the real experiences of those who come through our doors.

The Consumer Advisor role has been supported since May 2025 and the impact is meaningful –  ensuring patients, whānau, and staff are represented in conversations about wellbeing, and that the Emergency Department remains a place where care is not only clinically excellent, but also compassionate, safe, and supportive for everyone.

Wellbeing in the Emergency Department is vital. Patients and staff often face stressful, high-pressure situations, and EDWWIN provides tools and shared learning for staff to care for each other as well as those they serve.

By supporting initiatives like EDWWIN, we are helping the Adult Emergency Department lead the way in creating healthier, more sustainable workplaces — and better outcomes for patients across Aotearoa.
