This valuable technology measures a patient's energy expenditure and metabolic rate, allowing Critical Care teams to create tailored nutrition and treatment plans for each individual patient, whether they are critically ill or on the road to recovery.
Varsha explains what the equipment does and why it matters – watch here.
Thank you to Akarana Community Trust for making this possible. Your gift is changing the way our Critical Care teams care for some of Auckland City Hospital's most vulnerable patients.
Varsha shares a message of thanks for our generous donors – watch here.
The Indirect Calorimeter is now a vital piece of equipment for both the Critical Care and Intensive Care (ICU) teams, with growing evidence showing it significantly improves patient outcomes. No two patients are the same, and the right nutrition at the right time can make all the difference to their recovery.
"It's very important for our patients to have improved nutrition delivery – not only during their time in the ICU, but after they leave too." – Varsha Asrani
Better nutrition support means better functional outcomes in the community – patients who are healthier, stronger, and have an improved quality of life long after they leave the hospital.
